    Prem Shots Review

The Bengali OTT space has witnessed remarkable growth in recent years, with filmmakers exploring contemporary relationships, emotional trauma, and modern-day romance. Prem Shots, directed by Srimanta Sengupta, attempts to join that list by presenting a heartfelt love story about two emotionally scarred individuals searching for hope and companionship.

Starring Bonny Sengupta, Angana Roy, Shreya Gupta, and Debdut Ghosh, the six-episode ZEE5 series promises an intimate exploration of love, heartbreak, healing, and second chances. While the premise holds genuine potential and the lead actors deliver sincere performances, Prem Shots ultimately struggles under the weight of an inconsistent screenplay, repetitive storytelling, and a lack of emotional intensity.

    Story

The story follows Ayush (Bonny Sengupta), a man carrying the emotional scars of a failed relationship. During a family wedding, he crosses paths with Sylva (Angana Roy), a cheerful yet equally vulnerable young woman dealing with her own personal struggles.

What begins as an accidental meeting gradually develops into friendship and romance. As the relationship deepens, both characters are forced to confront unresolved emotional wounds, complicated family dynamics, and painful memories that continue to shape their present.

The narrative attempts to portray how love can become a healing force for two broken individuals. While this emotional foundation feels relatable, the execution rarely reaches its full potential. The story often repeats familiar situations without adding new emotional layers, making several episodes feel stretched despite the series’ relatively short runtime.

    Screenplay & Direction

The biggest obstacle preventing Prem Shots from becoming a memorable romantic drama is its screenplay.

Director Srimanta Sengupta introduces multiple emotional conflicts throughout the series. Ayush’s unresolved past, Sylva’s strained family relationships, and their individual insecurities all have the potential to create a deeply engaging narrative.

Unfortunately, these threads remain largely underdeveloped.

Instead of allowing emotions to unfold naturally through visual storytelling and meaningful character progression, the series relies heavily on lengthy conversations that frequently revisit the same conflicts. Many scenes communicate the characters’ feelings rather than allowing audiences to experience them.

The pacing also becomes uneven, with several episodes slowing the narrative without significantly advancing the story or character development. By the time the emotional climax arrives, the audience understands the characters but never truly becomes emotionally invested in their journey.

    Performances

    Bonny Sengupta

Bonny Sengupta delivers one of the more restrained performances of his recent career. His portrayal of Ayush feels believable, especially during moments of vulnerability and emotional conflict. While the screenplay limits his character’s growth, Bonny manages to maintain sincerity throughout the series.

    Angana Roy

Angana Roy brings warmth and natural charm to Sylva. She performs emotional scenes with confidence and never appears melodramatic. Her screen presence complements Bonny well, although stronger writing could have transformed her into a far more memorable character.

    Supporting Cast

Shreya Gupta leaves a positive impression despite limited screen time, while Debdut Ghosh performs adequately in his supporting role. However, several secondary characters feel underwritten and exist primarily to move the plot forward rather than contribute meaningfully to the emotional journey.

Chemistry Between Bonny Sengupta & Angana Roy

A romantic drama succeeds only when viewers emotionally believe in its central relationship.

Although Bonny Sengupta and Angana Roy share comfortable screen space and appear convincing together, their romance lacks the emotional spark necessary to elevate the series. Several important relationship milestones arrive too quickly, making the romance feel more narrated than experienced.

As a result, audiences may appreciate their performances without becoming deeply invested in their love story.

    Technical Aspects

Technically, Prem Shots is a polished production.

The cinematography beautifully captures Kolkata’s urban landscape while maintaining an intimate visual style that suits the story’s emotional tone. The production design feels realistic, and the background score subtly supports the narrative without overwhelming the scenes.

Editing remains serviceable, although trimming repetitive conversations could have significantly improved the pacing and overall viewing experience.

    What Works

    • Bonny Sengupta delivers a sincere and controlled performance.
    • Angana Roy brings natural warmth to her character.
    • Beautiful cinematography showcasing Kolkata.
    • Strong production values throughout.
    • A few emotional moments genuinely resonate.

    What Doesn’t Work

    • Weak and inconsistent screenplay.
    • Repetitive dialogues and similar emotional conflicts.
    • Slow pacing in multiple episodes.
    • Supporting characters remain underdeveloped.
    • Romance lacks emotional intensity.
    • Predictable narrative progression.

    Final Verdict

Prem Shots has all the ingredients of an engaging contemporary romance—a capable cast, an appealing premise, and polished production values. However, its weak screenplay and repetitive storytelling prevent it from delivering the emotional impact it consistently aims for.

Bonny Sengupta and Angana Roy give honest performances that keep the series watchable, but even their efforts cannot overcome the lack of narrative depth. The series succeeds in creating a pleasant atmosphere but struggles to create lasting emotional resonance.

For viewers who enjoy slow-burning romantic dramas, Prem Shots offers a gentle, easy watch. Those expecting a deeply moving relationship drama, however, may find themselves wanting much more.
