‘Maharaja Tomare Selam’ Unveils Stellar Cast; 2027 Set to Celebrate the Legacy of Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne
Kolkata: Priya Cinema witnessed a grand celebration of Bengali cinema on Sunday morning as Srijit Mukherji’s upcoming film ‘Maharaja Tomare Selam’ unveiled its stellar cast in character for the first time. The event also brought a major announcement for fans of Satyajit Ray’s iconic classic Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne, with 2027 shaping up to be a landmark year for the beloved cinematic universe.
The event began with National Award-winning filmmaker Srijit Mukherji unveiling the motion poster of Maharaja Tomare Selam. The reveal introduced the ensemble cast along with glimpses of the characters they will portray.
The film features Jeetu Kamal, Ritwik Bhowmik, Rudranil Ghosh, Samik Roy Chowdhury, Satakshi Nandy, Sairity Banerjee and Arijit Dutta in pivotal roles.
Produced by Hoichoi Studios and Friends Communication, in association with Piyali Films Pvt. Ltd., Maharaja Tomare Selam explores the story behind the making of one of Indian cinema’s most celebrated classics, Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne.
Rather than simply retelling the story of the iconic film, Srijit Mukherji’s directorial venture focuses on the imagination, conviction and creative perseverance that helped bring Satyajit Ray’s legendary vision to life.
The event also featured the presence of renowned composer and musician Debojyoti Mishra, who is associated with the musical legacy of Satyajit Ray and is contributing the background score for the upcoming film.
Adding to the nostalgic atmosphere, Band Paridhi, featuring Durnibar Saha and Sutirtha on vocals, performed a specially curated musical tribute to Maharaja Tomare Selam. The performance revisited some of the timeless songs from Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne, turning the auditorium into a celebration of Bengali cinema and music.

Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne to Get a 4K Restoration
One of the biggest announcements of the event was that Satyajit Ray’s ‘Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne’ is undergoing a prestigious 4K restoration by Film Heritage, in association with Martin Scorsese’s Film Foundation.
The restored version is scheduled to be showcased in 2027, giving audiences an opportunity to experience the timeless classic in a new format.
Interestingly, Srijit Mukherji’s Maharaja Tomare Selam is also slated for release in 2027. This creates a special connection between the original masterpiece and a new film exploring the story behind its creation.
Held at Priya Cinema in association with Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, the event became more than just a film launch. It marked the beginning of a larger celebration of the legacy of Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne while introducing a new cinematic chapter inspired by its history.
With the 4K restoration of Satyajit Ray’s classic and the release of Srijit Mukherji’s ‘Maharaja Tomare Selam’ both lined up for 2027, the coming year promises to be a special one for Bengali cinema lovers.
