Bengali cinema has rarely explored the superhero genre, making Katukutu Buro one of the year’s most ambitious releases. Written, directed by, and starring Ujaan Ganguly, the film blends psychological drama, vigilante action, and social commentary into a story that dares to be different. While its originality deserves appreciation, the film struggles to fully realize its potential due to an uneven screenplay and inconsistent pacing.

The story follows Kedar Barua (Ujaan Ganguly), a young man haunted by childhood trauma. Unable to escape painful memories, he gradually transforms into a mysterious vigilante after a series of emotional events reshape his life. Rather than relying on flashy superhero elements, the film focuses on the psychological journey of a man fighting both his inner demons and the injustices around him. This grounded approach is refreshing and sets the film apart from conventional commercial entertainers.

As a first-time director, Ujaan Ganguly deserves credit for attempting something rarely seen in Bengali cinema. His vision is clear, and several scenes showcase genuine cinematic promise. The emotional tone, symbolic imagery, and superhero concept create an intriguing world that feels fresh. However, the film often tries to juggle too many themes—trauma, romance, revenge, justice, and social issues—without giving any of them enough room to develop fully. As a result, the narrative occasionally feels unfocused.

The screenplay is where Katukutu Buro loses momentum. The central idea of emotional healing through a superhero lens is compelling, but the execution lacks the depth needed to create a lasting impact. Several emotional moments feel rushed, while the romantic subplot never becomes emotionally engaging. Supporting characters are introduced with promise but receive limited development, making their presence less effective than expected. The film also struggles to balance its psychological drama with superhero storytelling, leaving both aspects feeling only partially explored.

Performance-wise, Ujaan Ganguly delivers a sincere and committed act. Balancing both acting and directing is challenging, but he manages to portray Kedar’s emotional vulnerability convincingly. Rapurna Bhattacharyya shares comfortable chemistry with Ujaan and performs naturally, although her character deserved a stronger arc. Anujoy Chattopadhyay stands out with an energetic and memorable performance, while Churni Ganguly leaves a lasting impression despite limited screen time. The supporting cast, including Rahul Arunoday Banerjee and Bhaswar Chatterjee, perform adequately but are restricted by the screenplay.

Technically, the film is a respectable effort. The cinematography captures the mood effectively, and the superhero costume design deserves special praise for giving the protagonist a unique visual identity. The background score complements the emotional scenes but lacks the intensity needed during action sequences. Editing remains competent, although a tighter runtime could have improved the overall pacing.

Ultimately, Katukutu Buro succeeds as an ambitious experiment rather than a completely satisfying superhero film. It introduces a fresh concept to Bengali cinema and demonstrates Ujaan Ganguly’s willingness to take creative risks. While the film doesn’t fully capitalize on its excellent premise, its originality, sincere performances, and emotional core make it a worthwhile one-time watch.
